linalol

Linalool: three questions to understand CBD's flagship terpene

If you're familiar with the pleasures of hemp, you'll know that terpenes play a decisive role in the aroma, fragrance and effects of CBD flower. Today, the 321CBD team turns the spotlight on a colorful terpene: linalool! Here's everything you need to know about this compound in three questions (and three answers).

#1 Linalool is a terpene… but what is it, exactly?

In the large family of terpenes, we call linalool, an organic compound that plays a major role in the scent and aroma of some hemp strains the most emblematic such as Special Sauce, Lavender, Amnesia Haze, ACDC or even Master Kush.

This alcoholic monoterpene with a simple structure gives off a sweet floral and slightly spicy scent reminiscent of lavender, a plant which is also very rich in it. This terpene is very volatile, which allows it to diffuse very quickly in the air and to be quickly identified by our sense of smell. This is why it is widely used in perfumes and everyday aromatic products. Its discreet appearance, in the form of a colorless liquid, reinforces its applications in the perfume industry... but not only that, because this monoterpene is also in high demand in the pharmaceutical industry . Which brings us to the next point…

#2 What are the effects and applications of linalool?

Unlike so-called “energizing” terpenes such as limonene, pinene, eucalyptol or even terpinolene, linalool is sought after for itscalming and soothing properties. As such, we will find this terpene in greater quantities in Cannabis Indica. But here is an important nuance: with the generalization of hybridization processes, the majority of strains now combine characteristics of Cannabis Indica and Cannabis L. Sativa. As such, an“energizing” strain, Sativa dominant, may contain linalool. Let's close this little parenthesis.

If linalool is so popular in the pharmaceutical industry, it is because it has a certain number of interesting properties:

  • Anxiolytic properties. In animal studies (see here), linalool has been shown to reduce anxiety, with an action similar to that of traditional anxiolytic drugs, but with fewer side effects;

  • A sedative effect. Several experimental research suggests that linalool promotes healthy and restful sleep. Beyond its odor reminiscent of lavender, which is particularly soothing, this sedative effect seems to be explained by an interaction with the central nervous system, in particular the receptors for the neurotransmitter GABA;

  • Anti-epileptic virtues. CBD and, more broadly, the hemp plant, has largely demonstrated its potential in the treatment of certain forms of epilepsy. We talk about it here. Linalool appears to have these same virtues, since preclinical studies have shown its ability to stabilize electrical activity in the brain, with a notable reduction in the frequency and intensity of seizures. This study details this effect.

To return to the context of legal hemp, which interests us, a strain rich in linalool will therefore be soothing, relaxing and calming. It will allow you to fight against stress and anxiety which are making your life difficult, while promoting a good night's sleep.

#3 Why do CBD regulars seek out linalool-rich strains so much?

This is a question we asked ourselves several years ago, when we realized that strains rich in linalool were having some success on our online store.< /span>

The answer is simple: some studies estimate that linalool has a more marked role than other terpenes in the “entourage” effect. As a reminder, this effect would be that the combination of the entire spectrum of the hemp plant (terpenes, cannabinoids, flavonoids) provides the consumer with tenfold effects compared to the consumption of pure CBD (CBD isolate).

The craze for linalool can also be explained by its calming properties which reinforce the anti-stress side of the CBD flower. Strains like Lavender Kush and LA Confidential are a very concrete example of this.

Another key argument: scent is a CRUCIAL element in aroma therapy. Strains like Special Sauce and Amnesia Haze are highly concentrated in linalool, which gives them a characteristic odor which will contribute to the soothing and relaxing effect.

Finally, some studies suggest that linalool may facilitate the absorption of CBD in the body, potentially by increasing its solubility or influencing cell membranes. This is undoubtedly why Master Kush and ACDC are particularly effective for slightly stressed consumers.
