How about sharing your CBD with your... dog?

But why are more and more French people sharing their infatuation with CBD with their four-legged companions? Can this cannabinoid extracted from the hemp plant replicate its virtues on your dog? We explain...

CBD and dogs, a funny idea?

Not really, because the interest and effectiveness of CBD in a species is conditioned by the presence of an endocannabinoid system in the body. And like humans (and felines), dogs have one!

As a reminder, this system regulates many functions such as mood, pain, appetite and the immune system.

Whether in humans, dogs or cats, the consumption of CBD in recommended doses can improve the quality of daily life by neutralizing stress and anxiety, by soothing pain, relieving inflammation and promoting healthy and restful sleep. What does science say?

CBD and dogs: osteoarthritis, epilepsy and atopic eczema

The interest in non-psychotropic hemp for our faithful four-legged companions does not really arouse the enthusiasm of French, or European, scientific literature. We must therefore cross the Atlantic to find relevant answers.

The prestigious Cornell University was undoubtedly the first to take an interest in the subject. In an experimental study published in early 2018, researchers demonstrated that CBD significantly reduced pain in 80% of dogs suffering from osteoarthritis, allowing them to improve their mobility and be more active.

Based on the available literature, Mr. Wakshlag believes that hemp products appear to have a place in the treatment of osteoarthritis, atopic dermatitis and epileptic seizures.

In another study, this time carried out by the University of Colorado, CBD demonstrated its effectiveness in the management and improvement of the quality of life of dogs suffering from epilepsy and other similar neurological diseases, in conjunction with usual treatments.

This conclusion is consistent with the work of Professor Orrin Devinsky published in 2017 and 2018, which demonstrated that CBD was a serious avenue for reducing the frequency and intensity of epileptic seizures in humans (notably epileptic syndrome). of Lennox – Gastaut and Dravet epileptic syndrome). We talk about it here.

Finally, let us cite a third study, carried out by the Australian company CannPal, specializing in natural animal therapies. As part of this trial, dogs affected by atopic eczema were randomly given a CBD product or a placebo for four weeks. The results are astonishing: 65% of dogs who received cannabidiol saw the frequency and intensity of their itching decrease by at least 50%. Among them, half no longer suffered from itching after four weeks of treatment.
