Criterion #1: CBD concentration
It may sound counterintuitive, but here’s the rule to remember: the more concentrated your CBD oil, flower or infusion is (while staying within recommended doses)… the more relaxing the effect.
When the concentration is too low, the body receives a signal that is far too weak, and the effect becomes almost imperceptible. Sometimes you may even feel more alert, especially if the CBD product you consume has an orange or lemon aroma (we’ll come back to this in criterion #4).
You need a minimum level of potency for CBD products to help you relax, fall asleep and stay asleep. Of course, dosage depends on your experience with legal hemp. A CBD oil considered “extra-strong” for a beginner may feel “normal” to an experienced user. Always start with the lowest possible dose and adjust gradually until you find your sweet spot.
To make things easier, here is a reference table with suggested dosages depending on the type of CBD product (for guidance only):

321CBD Tips |
|
CBD oil |
Beginner: between 10% and 15%
Regular user: between 20% and 30% |
Place a few drops under your tongue for about one minute before swallowing. The effect usually appears after 30 to 60 minutes. Take your CBD oil about one hour before going to sleep, ideally at a fixed time to establish the routine. |
|
Capsules / softgels |
Beginner: 25 mg of CBD per dose Regular user: 50 mg of CBD per dose |
Swallow the capsule with a glass of water after dinner. The effect appears gradually, between one hour and one hour and a half after intake. |
|
Flowers / resins (as herbal tea or vaporized) |
Around 8% to 12% CBD |
Use them as an infusion or through gentle vaporization—never combustion (no smoking). For herbal tea, add a fatty substance (milk, vegetable oil) to improve absorption. For vaporization, stay around 180°C to preserve calming compounds. |
|
Ready-to-use herbal teas / infusions |
Around 20 to 30 mg of CBD per cup |
Let steep for 8 to 10 minutes in hot water with a bit of fat, then consume after dinner. The effect is gradual and promotes long-lasting relaxation. |
|
Edibles (honey, gummies, chocolate) |
10 to 25 mg of CBD depending on the product |
Consume them about two hours before going to bed. The effect is gradual and will help you sleep through the night. Avoid taking several sugary products in a row to prevent digestive discomfort.

Criterion #2: The presence of CBN
No need to worry: CBN, or cannabinol, is not a synthetic compound. It is a naturally occurring cannabinoid found in the hemp plant.
Often called the “sleep molecule,” CBN enhances the relaxing effect of CBD, both physically and mentally. It promotes deep, high-quality sleep.
This makes it particularly helpful if your sleep issues stem from muscle tension, physical discomfort or intrusive thoughts causing nighttime awakenings.
Here’s what you should know before buying a product containing CBN:
- CBN occurs in very small amounts in the hemp plant. This makes it more expensive than CBD.
- The Full Spectrum CBD oils we offer contain CBN.
- Like CBD, CBN is fully legal in France as long as the final product contains less than 0.3% THC — which is true for 100% of the CBD products sold on our online store.

Criterion #3: The type of CBD spectrum

The spectrum type determines the exact composition of your CBD product. Does it contain only CBD? Or a broader combination of CBD plus additional beneficial compounds (like CBN), terpenes, flavonoids, and more?
This is mainly a factor for hemp oils. There are three spectrum types:
- Full Spectrum CBD oil, which contains EVERYTHING the hemp plant naturally offers (including THC, but never above the legal 0.3% limit).
- Broad Spectrum CBD oil, which contains all naturally occurring hemp compounds except THC.
- CBD isolate, which contains only pure CBD.
For quick sleep onset and uninterrupted rest, choose Full Spectrum — or at least Broad Spectrum — CBD oil.
These products are the most likely to produce the famous entourage effect, which enhances the benefits of legal hemp. You’ll drift into dreamland without counting sheep. To learn more, read our article: “What is the entourage effect?”

Criterion #4: Taste and aroma
Chemistry isn’t the only factor that helps you relax. Experience and sensory perception also matter. The taste and aroma of your CBD oil, flowers or teas can influence how your body reacts. Some flavours support relaxation while others boost alertness.
Earthy, woody or floral notes — such as lavender, chamomile or raw hemp — are ideal. They evoke nature, warmth and calm, making you more receptive to CBD’s soothing effects.
Conversely, fresh or citrus notes like lemon, mint, grapefruit or orange promote energy. They evoke motion, freshness and vitality. These CBD flavours are better suited for daytime use.
Some products blend both families: a floral base for relaxation elevated by a hint of citrus. These blends work well for people who want to ease stress and anxiety without triggering drowsiness.

Criterion #5: Additional ingredients

Some CBD products include plants or natural extracts alongside cannabinoids — especially teas. For maximum relaxation, prioritise chamomile, verbena, lavender and lemon balm, which support sleep, especially during the falling-asleep phase.
If you want more “premium” botanicals, look for passionflower or valerian, traditionally used for light anxiety and mild insomnia.
Avoid ginseng, guarana, rosemary and peppermint, as these plants are stimulating rather than calming.
In oils and capsules, natural oils such as MCT coconut oil or hemp seed oil improve CBD absorption and support digestive comfort. This combination provides a more stable, gradual effect — ideal for a good night’s sleep.

CBD for sleep: Your complete FAQ
.jpg)
Does CBD really help with sleep?
Yes. Cannabidiol acts on the nervous system and promotes both physical and mental relaxation. It helps reduce tension and racing thoughts that prevent sleep. Users typically report better sleep quality, calmer nights and more restorative rest. CBD also helps regulate sleep cycles without addiction or intense sedation.
Can CBD be combined with melatonin?
Yes, it can. Melatonin regulates the biological clock and helps you fall asleep, while CBD calms the nervous system. Together, they may support deep, lasting sleep. Still, consult a healthcare professional before combining supplements, especially if you are under medical treatment.
Which CBD product is best for sleep?
Full Spectrum CBD oils are the most effective for sleep because they contain CBD, CBN and other natural compounds that contribute to restorative rest.
When should you take CBD for sleep?
Take CBD about one hour before bedtime to give your body time to absorb it. This routine helps synchronise your internal clock and improves sleep onset. Avoid caffeine and screens before bed, as they reduce melatonin production and harm sleep quality.
Can CBD replace sleeping pills?
No, CBD should not replace prescription medication. However, it can be a natural support for those seeking better sleep without resorting to medication — ideally with approval from their doctor.
