Cannabis Cups is more than just a marijuana fair. With each cup, you can learn from the pros, from live grow room tours with world-renowned cultivation experts to cooking demonstrations with cannabis chefs.

How are these competitions judged?

It is scored using a two-tiered numerical system that includes a qualitative score from the judges and a quantitative score from the lab results. The qualitative score accounts for about 75% of the total, with judges looking at aroma, flavour, visual aesthetics, stone/high and burn/discharge. Other factors vary by category.

Who are these judges?

All judges are experts or professionals in the cannabis industry who have demonstrated extremely high levels of knowledge about cannabis and are very dedicated to both the cause and the task of judging. Highlife uses an online application process to select judges from around the world to participate, and past Cup winners and competitors are encouraged to apply for a trial (in a city far from yours) to see our process from the inside! Access to the application is as simple as asking a Highlife staff member who is willing to vouch for their expertise. However, judging starts before the competition, so you must be available in the pre-event area.

The big winners of the 2021 Cannabis Cup

As mentioned, the cannabis cup includes many varieties. There are a total of 15 categories. For each category, three samples were selected and ranked in order of merit. In addition, two strains stood out by cumulative points and are the two big winners of the competition. They are Magic Coffeeshop from La Haya with Shaher Magic winner of Copa HighLife Hash and Dizzy Duck Coffeeshop from La Haya with Amnesia Haze winner of Copa High Life Weed 2021.

What strains of cannabis exist?

Cannabis exists in many varieties and subspecies. Cultivators and farmers have long been selecting different varieties with certain characteristics to create specific hybrids and strains.

Cannabis has a long history of being used as a plant.

Each variety of cannabis has a different concentration of the cannabinoids tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), cannabidiol (CBD), and other compounds. Growers cultivate plants to have a certain look, taste, and effect on the user and mark them accordingly.

Cannabis is a very popular drug in many countries.

Currently, reports on the effects of different strains of cannabis come effectively from people's experiences. Although researchers are studying the effects of a variety of cannabis strains on a range of medical conditions, there is still a long way to go in this area.

Cannabis strains

All cannabis strains come from the Cannabaceae plant family. Some experts consider Cannabis indica and Cannabis sativa to be the two main subspecies, although some people think they are separate species.

To create a strain, growers select a variety of traits to produce the effects they want. This is a process similar to how breeders create particular characteristics in dogs.

People often describe cannabis strains as indica, sativa, or hybrids. Hybrid refers to a strain created by combining both indica and sativa strains.

CBD and THC

Until now, most research on the medical benefits of cannabis has focused on THC and CBD. However, researchers and scientists are still unsure of the ideal amounts of THC and CBD that people should use for various medical conditions or for recreation.

Although THC and CBD are both cannabinoids, they work differently in the body because they target different areas of the brain.

According to a 2020 Trusted Source article, people who use products high in THC may experience psychoactive effects, such as euphoria and increased sensitivity to things like color and taste. However, THC can also lead to anxiety and paranoia.

CBD, on the other hand, is not intoxicating. Some people report mild physiological effects, such as reduced anxiety when using CBD.

Animal studies suggest that CBD may help improve vomiting, nausea, pain, and provide neuroprotective effects on the brain.

However, because CBD can affect mood, some experts describe it as a non-intoxicating but psychoactive compound.

Government organizations have approved certain cannabis-related products, including:

  • two synthetic THC-based drugs for the treatment of AIDS-associated anorexia
  • another synthetic cannabis-related product for the treatment of nausea and vomiting associated with cancer treatment
  • Cannabis-derived CBD for children 2 years and older with rare seizure disorders

Trusted Source studies are ongoing to determine if CBD has other physiological effects. Preliminary human data suggests that CBD may benefit conditions such as schizophrenia and even opioid addiction.

In addition, many studies are still underway to demonstrate the effects of CBD on the human body. Nevertheless, this substance legalized a few years ago in Europe is already enjoying great popularity.
